South African leathercraft company Cape Cobra has collaborated with Carducci Woman for the launch of their accessory collection, which premiered at Arise Cape Town Fashion Week in August 2009.
Francois Rall, Head of Design for Carducci Woman, and the Cape Cobra design team created two iconic styles for the Carducci Woman brand and manufactured the different pieces in combinations of Nappa and Suede leather with exotic trims such as Ostrich, Crocodile and Lizard. Elegant belts and shoes complete the accessory ensemble.
Francois, had approached Cape Cobra for the collaboration after experiencing the leathercraft company’s top standards at an exclusive viewing earlier this year. “I was amazed by Cape Cobra’s quality of production, in both the design and the manufacturing of the various exotic leather bags and accessories with the highest level of attention to detail” he says. “While remaining proudly South African, we at Carducci strive to provide sophisticated fashion of uncompromised quality that can compete internationally. We are glad that we found Cape Cobra, a South African based company who can deliver work to international quality standards, to partner with for our accessories collection.”
Cape Cobra also manufactures for top international design houses and labels such as Michael Kors, and Judith Leiber and the luxurious bags have been worn by the likes of Debra Messing, “Desperate Housewife” Marcia Cross, Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Lopez and Anne Hathaway.

In honour of Nelson Mandela and as part of the prestigious Mandela Day Couture Collection 2009, South African manufacturer of high quality, handcrafted exotic leather pieces, Cape Cobra, has produced a single limited edition ensemble comprising of a tote and resort clutch. The collection is showcased in New York during July and at the Paris Fashion Week in September before returning to South Africa. The collection will be auctioned and the proceeds will be going to the various charities supported by Nelson Mandela.
The Cape Cobra ensemble is crafted from ostrich and crocodile leather, farmed and tanned locally in support of the local industry and trade. The silhouette of the tote resembles the organic shape of the iconic African woven basket, patchwork and hand-woven handles signify African craftsmanship. The five blocks connected in matching colour zigzag stitching represent the unity in diversity of South Africa’s different cultures. “The five blocks of which one is red also reminds us of South Africa’s HIV statistic, as 1 in every 5 people in South Africa carries the virus“, explains the Cape Cobra design team. “Gathered from the play of the Khululeka Outreach Programme, a 46664 project, the red block symbolizes HIV and the affect the disease has on our country, which is represented by the bag.”
The raw silk lining of the bag carries the imprints of the children’s hands, printed by children from James House, a child and youth care centre in Hout Bay, Cape Town that works with abused and abandoned children. The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund is one of the foundations that support the centre.
The Mandela Day Couture Collection includes single limited edition pieces of fashion brands around the world. All the pieces are inspired by Nelson Mandela and his legacy and endorsed by a label with the numbers ‘46664′. The initiative has been founded jointly by Basetsana Khumalo and Gavin Rajah, for more information, contact Gavin Rajah on gavin@gavinrajah.com.

In the last week of April, a host of media representatives, stylists and personal shoppers came to visit us for our Exclusive Viewing event upstairs from our showroom. Between 10am and 2pm, we showcased selected pieces from our latest collection. The models presented the bags in different settings and styles, from business and leisure to couture with garments provided by Carducci, Granát by Adriana van Rooyen and Kobus Dippenaar.
We are excited about etv’s latest fashion format “Style Report”, produced by Nicky Greenwall. The team came to shoot the merchandise and took some interviews for a feature to be screened towards the end of May. Watch this space for more information!
Since the Exclusive Viewing, our merchandise (Handbags, belts, wallets etc.) is in and out of the showroom for various fashion shoots. Sunday Times’ Craig Jacobs featured us in the Sunday Times Lifestyle supplement on 10th of May and we are looking forward to seeing our bags featured in more of South Africa’s fashion and lifestyle publications.
Our thank you goes to Francois at Carducci, Kobus Dippenaar and Adriana van Rooyen, for providing us with their beautiful garments, and to Annelinda Kirsten and Savas Couvaras for make-up and hair-styling.
Last but not least we want to thank all our guests. Hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as we did!
Photographer Guido Schwarz covered the event.
