CCL in collaboration with OR-GARI

What do you get if you mix a love of handpainted local design with a deep appreciation for sustainable exotic leather? A new and exquisite luxury product that can truly be considered a work of art.

Cape Cobra Leathercraft and Or-gari Golden Safari have announced a special collaboration to produce the most exquisite local exotic leather bags and accessories adorned with intricately handpainted African themes and acacia twig styled hardware.

Or-gari Golden Safari was established in 2014 by Heidi Alexandra, an interior architect, who was born in South Africa and grew up in Europe, returning to South Africa seeking creative expression for her love of design, fine craftsmanship and especially, for Africa. Or-gari’s collectable décor products including a wide variety of ceramics, embody South African cultural significance and blend the values of tradition and innovation. Pieces are carefully handpainted by artists based predominantly at the company’s Franschoek studio.

Drawing on her fashion background, Heidi decided to expand the company’s offering to exclusive clientele with a deep appreciation for Africa and for a quality of product rivaling the best European luxury, and approached Cape Cobra Leathercraft with its impeccable reputation for making the finest exotic leather accessories. The two brands realised that their shared values made them the perfect pair to collaborate. Their love of artisan craft and hand made products, care for the environment through sustainable value chains and wildlife protection, and their investment in community upliftment and skills training, enabled a truly special relationship to develop and result in the creation of a capsule collection of truly one-of-a-kind bags, crafted by Cape Cobra and handpainted by Or-gari.

Cape Cobra Leathercraft was established in 1972 in Cape Town as a family-run business drawing on the traditional craft of leather manufacturing, named after the Cape Cobra snake. Perfectionism is in the brand’s DNA. Three generations have spent decades investing in their people and honing the business’s craft and quality, requiring a high degree of specialisation and using a careful blend of traditional craft and cutting-edge techniques.

“These are pieces that are unique – creating a bespoke one of a kind creation which you are able to keep forever and pass from generation to generation. We feel really passionate and strongly about educating the South African artisan and allowing them the opportunity to create luxury products by beneficiating sustainable local materials,” said Justine Schafer, Cape Cobra’s Creative Manager and daughter of Managing Director Robert Schafer. Cape Cobra and Or-gari’s expert artisans are trained in-house and through delicate, time-intensive processes, have fashioned an extraordinary, truly bespoke range of accessories that celebrates the spirit and majesty of Africa.

Pieces are African inspired, designed, and made with local exotic ostrich leather material, handcrafted by Cape Cobra’s expert artisans, and individually handpainted by Or-gari artists in Franschoek, then finished with castings of individually picked acacia twigs hardware. Clients will be able to view the capsule collection at Or-gari’s Flagship boutique in Hyde Park or their studio in Franschoek, as well as at Cape Cobra’s showroom in Green point, where they can place their individual bespoke orders.

There are 15 stunning options to choose from, including the style and size of bag with 5 varieties, 3 colour options – blue, white and black – with plans to offer classic brown as well as seasonal colours in the future. Clients can then excitingly personalise their bag by selecting one of 3 handpainted themes from the Or-gari Golden Safari collection. Each bag, made from the best ostrich shin, is individually handpainted, and will vary slightly as a once off piece.

The Wildlife theme features an exotic choice of zebra, elephant or leopard; The Floral theme features the delicately vibrant flame lily, native to the Western Cape; and the Bird theme shows off the colourful hoopoe with its distinctive crown in marvelous detail.

This very special collection will preview at Or-gari’s Hyde Park boutique on Wednesday 14th September, an event not to be missed.
